“There is a myth abroad in the land that George Hall ʼ35, of Flint, Michigan would like to straighten out.  Ohio State people have long claimed that their band was the first to perform the word “Ohio” in script on the football field.  ‘Taint so, says Hall, a former Michigan bandsman himself.  Michigan was first.  As proof he provides the accompanying photograph taken of the Michigan Band on October 15, 1932.  It has just finished scripting ‘Ohio’ at halftime in the Ohio State Stadium.  Ohio State publicity has long contended that the first script-writing by a band was performed by THERE band in 1936.  Says Hall in a letter to the Michigan Alumnus:  ‘I concede that Ohio State people can both write and spell and that their brass band is reasonably good, but they weren’t the first to do the script.  We were!’

(Michigan Alumnus, November, 1969, p 23).

WHICH BAND PERFORMED FIRST SCRIPT ‘OHIO”?

WHY, MICHIGAN, OF COURSE!
